And now we see Edgar demonstrate backwards-bending cicada. In this video, at ~27min into ecdysis (molting), he has bent back enough that we can see the opercula—those large translucent flaps under his hindmost legs, that are part of what identify him as a male.
The second item here captures the sheen on Edgar’s cuticle of pruinescence or pruinosity—a waxy coating that gives a frosted or dusted appearance, that may also be seen on dragonflies and other Odonata insects.
