8/20/21: Betsy the Cicada, Part 16: Darkening/Climbing

OK, flashback to last year…so we last saw Betsy the Cicada about an hour after she finished eclosion (emergence), at around 9:45PM (AUG 24, 2020), and her wings had just shifted into their imago (adult) posture. She was still quite green and teneral (soft).

Here now is a comparison of her at 10:56PM and 12:10AM, and you can see the venation on her wings progressively darken, and some tan spots on her back and abdomen become closer to black. The second image is aside view 11:11PM.

The final two pics are from around 12:30AM, by which time Betsy had climbed up to the top of the foam roller. In the frontal shot, you can again see her 3 small ocelli (secondary eyes) in the middle of her face; in the shot from above, you can now clearly see the venation patterns of the smaller secondary wings beneath the larger primary pair.
